Distrust expanded far beyond political leaders to undermine public faith in mainstream media, higher education, public health authorities, and corporate institutions. This widespread skepticism toward traditional centers of authority created fertile ground for anti-establishment movements, which quickly gained momentum across all sides of the political spectrum.
What occurred in the immediate aftermath of September 11 showed what it looks like when a country sets aside its internal squabbles to support one another and meet an enormous challenge head-on. Rebuilding that kind of social trust and solidarity, even without an external crisis to force it, remains one of the most vital challenges of our time.
